Sometimes while on the phone
I fiddle with whatever
is nearby.

poetry

In the late 80's I met a workshop leader who also wrote
poetry, these pictures date from that time, about 1991.
It was winter in Colorado, unbelievably cold outside,
but mostly blue skies that looked like summer
in Australia, it tricked me many times.
I moved between there & Mexico.

last supper

Photographed a straw easter decoration floating in water,
years ago in Mexico, where it's a full-on celebration.
Here, there's a music festival.

Continuing random choices from my files, in the effort to
leave more time for other..whatever.
Here is San Cristobal de las Casas in Mexico left
& rocks near Crested Butte in Colorado.

brush drawings

Further pages photographed from one of my old
drawing books.
Am puzzling over where my next holiday will
take me: how to get to see new places, old friends,
at the best time of year, all in one package.
Of course I'm following the awful news from Japan,
it must be so hard for everyone there, & their loved ones
elsewhere.

I admire his photos & approach very much:

drawings

Another of my old concertina drawing books,
inconvenient to scan, so I photographed pages quickly.
As I explained earlier, I took these books with me on long
trips, full of reference for painting I might do.

I stayed in Mexico for 2 years that time, never
know so far ahead, even now ~ do you?
In some ways the web makes it much easier,
though I still prefer books, museums etc.

references

Some scanned pages of a small concertina style
drawing book. Drawing figures from some ballet books
was an easy way to carry reference for new paintings,

even though I didn't know yet what I'd
paint, nor that I'd be in San Cristobal de las Casas
for 2 years.
By the time it was drawn again, in another context,
they all looked completely different.

colour

One is in India, the rest in Mexico or Guatemala

From the early '70's I've taken lots of doors, windows &
old walls. I always wanted to find them open, &
photograph that, but it rarely happened, perhaps because
so many people were looking for work, or to sell something.
Jeffrey Becom has quite similar results
(probably more professional) as do many others, surely
~ the subject dictates the composition, more or less.
This, however - is it more than a co-incidence?

Gauguin: Since colour itself is mysterious in the sensation
that it gives, we can logically enjoy it mysteriously..
.. as a source of.. sensations proceeding from it's own nature,
from it's inner, mysterious, enigmatic force.

ditto

Maybe the places I lived have since been renovated,
'modernised', 'cleaned up'

with cool bars & bistros instead of..
which is too bad, as I had to ration my film, then,

So, yes, I'd like a ticket to the places I lived back then,
with a (as yet un-invented) digital camera; I could see
my friends again,
& take (& store) endless photos, etc etc.

glimpses

What I remember of some streets in San Cristobal de las Casas
is how a different group of musicians would be practicing
in every other house, one's walk was serenaded ..

& some walls - as left - were so beautifully altered by
the elements, other images emerged.

don't fix

Sporadically cleaning or tidying, which often means I
get sidetracked ~ into scanning, in this case.
I hope that this town I liked so much
(San Cristobal de las Casas)
doesn't start 'fixing' itself like some of the northern towns.

corners

These are next to each other in a folder of scanned photos,
which means before I had a digital camera, & they're all near
San Cristobal de las Casas. I'm liking the idea of
randomly choosing photos for colour, or by number,
or almost with my eyes closed, they make their
own stories, then.
Unusual stormy morning here, a 'twister' at nearby town.

next to

Decided to post some files that are next to each other
in my folders, but maybe not otherwise related, makes
me see them differently. So, some pretty Mexican sheep,
& a worn out snow lion mat ~ my friends have been in Tibet,
some great photos on flickr.

places

A clean up of my desk today, unearthed a stash of prints.
These are: Merida, Tulum, Oaxaca, Morelia.
It's always nice to remember Mexico.

aerial

From the air ~ don't know how much you'll be able to see,
they're 2 of my altered photos. It's the one thing I really like
about flying: seeing the country.

Looks like a really great trip: hoofprinting with evliya

in between

In the market at San Cristobal de las Casas.
These alterations which I made in the early '90's,
were usually minimal & could be seen
by moving the photo.
Maybe it's not so easy on the screen?

ghosts

This was a wonderful old structure, an ex-convent,
museum in San Cristobal de las Casas. I don't know
what kind of habit the nuns wore, this flashed into my mind.
To visit a building with walls so thick feels incredibly safe,
to live in it might have been claustrophobic?

endings

There can come a point where it looks like the end of the story..
It's lucky we don't often know the endings, or there would
be fewer beginnings. Also.. it happens by itself.

Inez Storer has a lovely way with stories.

health

Thinking about health, the differing ways we
try to maintain it, through intercession from 'above',
needles, knives, pills, potions, shamans, doctors et al.
(I like an occasional tune-up for the body from
a particular practicioner of cranio-sacral osteopathy.)
Real well-being is more about enjoying this moment as it is,
wouldn't you agree?

Have a look at Richard Lang video if you haven't already

I made a series of small paintings, years ago, about the homeopathic
remedies that produce certain kinds of dreams. These 3 are
Phosphorus, Silicea & Lycopodium. There were words & trance
inductions to go with them. All sold in an exhibition.

Today I heard the news at 6 am, of a tsunami in Samoa
& the Cook Islands area. Someone very close to me has been
sailing in the area for 10 days. I was truly relieved to hear
they are ok, ~ they felt the earthquake (8.3 !), & saw enough
to act with speed & get the hell away from the island
they were moored near. Too close for comfort, I'd say..
I should hear more in next couple of days.
