a few more

Plus I've lived at Nimbin, Springbrook, San Francisco,
Main Arm, Seeshaupt. Much as I love trees, & beach,
& the colour of towns, it's the mountains that
had the deepest effect.
Maybe that's true..

places I've lived

Following on from directions followed ~ I've lived in
many places, some of these, in no particular order are
Lucknow, Maui, Bali,
(Walter Spies' paintings in Bali were a joy to discover)

..Barrenjoey lighthouse, Cape Cod, Crested Butte,
Galisteo, Lincoln, London

& Dalhousie.
At that time there were several Tibetan monasteries.
My friends were thangka painting monks, who often
laughed when they saw my paintings. I helped start
a small school there for Tibetan children whose parents
worked weaving carpets.
Sublime views from the cottage.

paths

While looking through old photos, these few made
me think of the different paths I've taken ~
or, rather, how it seemed I'd chosen...
many kind people on the way, I'd like to thank them again.
It is sometimes strange where we end up, no ?

australia

I've so many cloud & beach photos, & every day
am likely to choose different ones; so it's really
only how it looks, here, sometimes.
I still mostly take photographs as reference,
or because I enjoy so much how the world looks.

mexico

I was painting in San Miguel Allende in mid 80's,
then for 2 years lived in San Cristobal de las Casas.
People in Chiapas averse to photography, as you would be,
when lots of tourists around; this lady knew I thought
her very beautiful. The constant excited colour
had a big influence in my works.
Dear friends live there, I want to go again..

usa

Several times I've stayed for some months in various
parts of the USA, &, way back, did a long trip all over, by bus.
These shots are New Mexico, Arizona & Colorado.
Such splendid landscapes in the southwest.

china

About 1982 I went to China, from Hong Kong:
to Guilin, Chungking
& then down the Yangtze to Shanghai.
Travelling alone was a challenge. It was always hazy,
very hot & very crowded. Loved the river.
Photos of Shanghai, now, look impossibly different.

sky lights

I've done a number of giclee limited edition prints,
(as well as images involving chandeliers, which appear in
A Recipe for Dreaming - Penguin '07)
Here is a very marvellous chandelier.

old & new

I wanted a certain sized picture for an old frame, to
go in the bathroom: that's it above: "I dreamed I could fly".
~ Love how fast that can happen on a computer ~
Middle image is the hexagram Peace, from my book,
"Images from the I Ching". (Ann Williams, Craftsman Press,
it may be available secondhand)
& the Rajasthani group is a gouache from early 80's.

from the past..

Since I've not been feltmaking lately, I'm posting some
archival stuff.
'Ages ago'= this was probably made
before you were born ~ certainly before computers.
I lived & painted for years in Dalhousie, India;
the mandala is hand-lettered with the 108 centreing exercises
from Zen Flesh Zen Bones.

I did a series of paintings on Chuang Tsu's famous butterfly dream,
(& also a book on the I Ching, 64 images of the hexagrams),
then a series about the kind of dreams typically found in certain
homeopathic remedies ~ this one was for Nux Vomica.

I don't know if I can get them to stay in the order I want.. no, well,
don't plan to use the afternoon working it out, let's just say this is
a small sample from many years, there's more in the posts
about our book Burning Questions
The image at top is 1/3 of a 5 metre long painting
for an educational facility, "endangered species".
Then there's the dream remedy, followed by one of the small
gouache on paper, of stones found at beach,
& one of the large acrylic on canvas paintings : "Beach"
The night-face mountain is gouache on paper.
I'd still like to paint, yet it's not happening that way,
have mainly been using a computer for last 7 or 8 years.

inheritance

Last year I was walking at the beach most days,
often with my camera.
Somehow that has linked to thoughts of family, & what we inherit
from further back than' living memory'. I wrote out some thoughts,
added other photos from my travels. Sorry it's hard to read,
I didn't want to make it any bigger, but click to enlarge.
