moving water

Have been playing with animating several photos like this;
since I don't know how to (easily) upload a 2MB gif file,
you'll have to imagine it.

Interesting photos etc on accidental mysteries
& a wonderfully erudite site Vertigo, mostly about books,
& my favourite author W.G.Sebald

wildlife

Don't you love how the camera sees more of what's there?
I was focusing on the wall painting, & only later saw the gecko.

Anonymous works has many fine folk-art images.
I want this book of wild posters from Ghana.
on TED, Joshua Klein on the intelligence of crows

like summer

It's not winter any more.
& maybe I won't complain again about crowds..

Sorry, I don't know where this came from,
it came without details, except that it's a beach in China.

Found a new vein of fascinating sites ~ here's one with old
postcards & stamps
, so evocative when they are on the
original envelope, aren't they? Those places before tourism,
so utterly alluring !

28/08/2009

hungry

Something was hungry. Today in Byron all the restaurants
that were open looked full ~ it's a holiday in Queensland,
& unfortunately the new highway is quick..

Lovely photos & recipes at la tartine gourmande
& more asian ones at rambling spoon

27/08/2009

calm

The beach today was just perfect,
lapping softly to the edge, then a few small rolling waves,
then calm again. Another couple of hundred shots, got some
really good ones, my finger was in tune. & it was quiet.

Like Cathy's drawing of rooks & more
(got dive bombed again by a magpie)

26/08/2009

flaming sword

Making small changes to some photos I shot in
Thailand; suits today, there are bushfires just
west of here, can smell the smoke.
Edition of 5 ~ leave a comment if you have a query.

Something different: lovely French & Turkish shops
plus French boxes from Maissa Toulet

25/08/2009

choosing

Resized these two digital prints, to email them, someone is
interested; so you can see them too.
Above was in A Recipe for Dreaming,

& this one is #5 in the Prince Charming series
I wonder how other people choose a picture for their wall,
I can just do a new one to suit my current direction..

Long gone (but there is a book) spectacular crafts at the V&A

24/08/2009

record

Terns always look so cool, don't they?
Supposed to be the hottest August day on record.
As a day on it's own, it's lovely ~ but can't help thinking
if this is winter, how will summer be?

Chill out in Antarctica or the Ice Hotel
Had to make some changes on paypal at Shantipress,
to reflect the changing rate of Australian $,
if you have a better suggestion of how to pay, leave a comment?

23/08/2009

vines

New flower spikes on the grass trees, & some signs of spring,
also a cheeky bird that dive bombed my head ~ must have a
nest nearby.

We don't really get a Spring, though there is a noticeable
vigour in the plant world.

Geert Goiris photographs ~ definitely somewhere else.

22/08/2009

a line

Thought a bit more about the act of drawing, particularly
old artifacts, sculpture etc..
or anything, really

..it can feel as if there's a link to the person who originally
made the object, as the pen moves around it's shape.
Maybe a (lesser) version of the Tibetan thangka painter
becoming the deity he is painting.

I enjoy the synthesis of old & new in Soody Sharifi's work
The brilliant Mitsuru Koga, see his tiny stone vessels.

21/08/2009

drawings

Scanned these from a small drawing book I like to use
in museums

Maybe some were in the British Museum, some in Munich

I miss having places like that to draw in.
Not for any purpose, just for the fun of drawing.

Marcin Sacha's photos of beautiful places

20/08/2009

markets

The local farmers' market here is Thursday mornings.
These are some markets in different parts of south-east Asia.

Isaac & Meike are in Germany at present, you can now
enjoy some meetings on live tv

19/08/2009

faded

Some of the oldest temples were so faded ~ only standing before
the walls for minutes, would the detail slowly shimmer into view.
I increased contrast so you could see, at low res; it also means
that subtlety of the design remnants disappears.

Very strong black & white photos from Bangladesh

18/08/2009

nearby

Flowers coming out everywhere. This is Grevillea.

Had to go to Ballina today. It has some old buildings that I like
better than the new shopping centres etc, maybe because
all small coastal towns had this feel, until.. when did it
all change to 'villas'?

Very wonderful images from Lovisa Ringborg

inheritance -3

Continuing.. if you click on the image, they get a little larger..

Not a lot, but enough..

Have been felt making for a few days, &
enjoying the sunny days & cool nights.

If you didn't already: read ~ & look at ~
the wonderfully warm hearted Maira Kalman.
I've her book The Principles of Uncertainty,
it's a knockout.
A friend in San Cristobal sent a link about
Marcey Jacobson.
I saw her impressive filing system for negs,
when I lived in San Cristobal de las Casas
but hadn't seen all the photos shown here. Lovely.

16/08/2009

this morning

Everyone had the same idea, to head for the beach. Even so,
it was relaxed, the wind blew away excess thoughts.

Two sculptors I wasn't familiar with: John McCracken
& Fred Sandback .

15/08/2009

inheritance-2

Don't know if I'll post all of it

~ using the post options for a few days ~

maybe there will be something else by Sunday,
then I just change the dates, or delete these.

The wonderful Maira Kalman.

inheritance-1

Taking it easy for a few days, so here's a readable version
of a small family book I posted last year.

My family also finds it a bit obscure..

But I still like it. Click for larger view

A lovely site for a great master, Satyajit Ray.

lines

A beach grass I know as beach 'spinifex'

Love how this tree looks like a mad scribble.

Some interesting images . Have been trying to upload my
latest morphing piece, without success.
A friend is going to Mustang.

12/08/2009

quiet day

In case they are not self explanatory,
one is about silk road travellers, the other ~ well,
actually, for you, it's whatever comes to mind.

here's a shocking garbage dump
&, perhaps, a cause for optimism

11/08/2009

twins

From the day we had our hair cut short ( as in heading),
& a little later, on the Barcoo River where we water ski-ed.
I think I may have taken more photos yesterday than
our family did in several years ~ with a Box Brownie.

Some kind of funny twinstuff. Years ago in LA I saw a show
of photographs of twins who'd married twins, it was quite illusory.
We are fraternal, not identical twins.
An interesting idea with old photos

10/08/2009

mountains

Partly it's the view from my house (70's) in Dalhousie, the rest
is crinkled paper, which often resembles mountains, no?

Tibetan monk artist friends gave me this thangka for my
30th birthday, I was living in Himachel Pradesh then.
Its my twin's birthday today, mine tomorrow,
& here we are, at our first school.

I like Gerhard Richter's art a lot, not just his mountains

09/08/2009

beach

Stunning day at the beach today.
Lately I've been using my small camera, as it's less heavy,
today I took the Canon, the results are better

Roman Signer. I particularly like his splashing wellingtons.

08/08/2009

lovely

Yet another lovely winter's day in paradise !

Would like to see these miniatures

07/08/2009

clear

A lovely clarity to the light today, the sea was glittering,
& I liked the paint-by-numbers stage of the tree trunk.
Although whales are going north, haven't seen many.

A radio pod cast on sperm whales.
John Jude Palencar's artwork caught my attention.

06/08/2009

green

Usually I think there is a light peculiar to Australia, most easily
seen in the greens ~ but when it's the same kind of trees,
it's hard to tell ( lower palms are in Laos )

Some research on colour & emotions
Woven sculptures & many good pieces.
Cant wait to see Yann Arthus-Bertrand's Home

05/08/2009

reflection

Water reflections. I wonder if, in other languages,
the word for reflection can also mean thinking ?

Some interesting pieces on realitysandwich
& amazing thoughts, if rather beyond me.

04/08/2009

bodhi tree

The ubiquitous symbol: the leaves of the bodhi tree.

Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche
always comes to mind
when I see a bodhi tree (I first saw him sitting beneath the
one in Bodh Gaya). Here is the essence of his teaching.

03/08/2009

eye exercises

Floor..

ceiling..

window..

door..

Don't tell me a camera stops you from noticing everything,
travel exercises the eyes, the heart & all the rest of it.

a journey round my skull

02/08/2009

a new print

Another of the limited edition prints that have sprung from my
trip to Laos & Thailand earlier this year: Vision 2.
You can leave a comment to get further details.

Spent hours at the fascinating Elsita today, also checking
out some of her links, liked Georgia Russell
and Emma Van Leest; Peter Callesen is truly brilliant.

01/08/2009

cats

Cats for August,
don't forget Tibetan snowlions .
