It was good to hear today that friends in Chile are safe,
& so far unaffected by the volcano eruption. There's some
amazing shots on thebigpicture, but I haven't figured out
how to add a link on Safari, unless I open an email with links.
Anyway you no doubt saw them before I did.

In 1982 I lived through a volcano eruption here in Mexico. The volcano was 80 km away, but some people here in town heard the sound from the first explosion. I had been fascinated by volcanoes since my childhood. Germany is quite far away from any. But when the ash came over us here in Chiapas in 1982 and it turned pitch black at 10 in the morning and smelled of sulfur, I feared the end of the world might have come. Quite an experience. The ash covered everything for a yer and I still found it in the attic of our business this spring!!!

That was definitely too close! The weird thing is that
we've had many days of cancelled flights since the big one in Chile, that's supposed to be along way off.
