found

While moving files around I 'found' the one at right,
thought it was lost: I overlaid aerial clouds on a Sukhothai
statue; above left apsaras in a Lao temple,

this old heart beats

tuk-tuk

This is the way to get around in towns across asia.
They are usually vividly painted, quite uncomfortable,
& cheap. The one below has thatched houses on
the middle panel, like the house behind it.

mist & rain

A friend drove me to an appointment in another town,
I could photograph the shapes through
the windscreen. It's unusual for here.

multiples

Multiple buddhas in most temples throughout asia,
endless variations,
You could say its the vernacular imagination,
but/& some are great works of art.

shadows

I love how shadows work, don't you?
Metaphors.

A different message than what it covers.

mekong fish

I saw some very primitive fish in the market in Laos,
nothing as large as in the painting, but I did wonder
who would know if it was the last of it's kind.

photos of photos

Many hours in past days sorting my photos
into different categories. While I'm there, I save some for this
blog, I'm interested to see whether I've used them before,

&/or used them in the same combinations. No real reason,
except to see how it is. These are in Laos & Thailand.

test

Several weeks ago I sent a camera for repair, it was lost
on the way back, then replaced, it arrived yesterday, so I was
out on this beautiful day. The gannets were fishing
top left, the brown shadow is a shoal of small fish.

Seems to work well; though I didn't try anything too
complex, theres a lot of detail for such bright contrast.

open wide

Sometimes hypnosis is like this: the words loop into
fantastic designs. Or synesthesia.

This is something different, don't you agree?

inventing

Fiddled with a few more dark pictures, or ones that weren't
showing up properly. Above are old prints on a temple wall,
possibly based on Jataka tales.

These were in a dark corner, I rarely use flash because
what I like is the glimmer of gold in dark spaces,
& how you must wait for the eyes to invent a bit more.

retrieval

Have been going through old travel photos to find
certain files. Realised I could get more out of some
that appeared nearly black a few years ago, due to very
dim interiors (or carelessness)
Above are bits of gold leaf on a battered ground

Around some altars in Laos are these ornate frames,
there doesn't seem to be much interest in restoring,
or maybe not enough donations, but that also means
the skills remain alive.

growing

There's an old timber fence on my western boundary,
it changes quite gradually with whats growing on it.
The small garden on the post lower left
grows maybe 1mm a year, even in a really wet one like 2012.
As I enjoy looking, theres a sense of an infinitesimal waving..
The fence is going to have to fall down before I'll replace it.

always something interesting at bldgblog

bought

Although there was stuff to buy at every step of this last trip,
I didn't get much. (I already have too many things)
I'd have liked a lot of the Muktinath fossils top
but confined it to one, perhaps a gift for my twin,
or we might each keep a half

The other was a large piece of embroidery, with
many animals, small stitches all over.

stupa

While drinking coffee one morning I watched a team
raise new flags, & paint the stupa.
They could run down the steep ladders facing forward,
while carrying stuff. First they flung buckets of the
yellow paint, then later a smaller but still graceful
throw of white paint left a large scalloped design.
I think this occurs at every full moon.
Imagine how thick the paint must be !

Boudha

While staying at Boudhanath, I'd walk to the
large stupa via the Shechen Gompa & it's wonderful
decorations. There are many prayer flags, & people.
& one day 2 cows did a brisk two rounds before
heading off via a side lane. Tons of shops, too, &
a cafe on almost every roof.

The stupa is very old, & has a strong presence.
People from everywhere pay their respects.
& there's always a lot of pigeons. Sometimes it looks
as if  they are watching from the rooves, but
it's probably just on the lookout for more corn.

lakeside

There's a large lake at Pokhara, the town comes to its
northern edge, & there are villages on hilly headlands
into the hazy distance

Many colourful boats which you can row yourself
or you can hire a boatman with it.
Its somehow different each day

I hung out at the lakeside cafe of Hotel Fewa quite often,
great view. When I extended my stay at the Sacred Valley Inn
there was a couple of days when it was full, so also stayed at the
Fewa, I liked the old place, it had a surprisingly
good view of the mountains, & friendly staff.

makes me want to get closer!

pokhara

Kept wanting to see the mountains really clear, in Pokhara,
but actually love this early dawn haze best, they
appear like a mystical vision. I think I'd never tire of this view.
In the new blogger format I can't tell how big they will appear,
but should enlarge when clicked.
