away

Away for 4 weeks, in Turkey ..

.. it's an awfully long flight, we stop briefly in Singapore
(where I saw this beautifully restored temple, years back)
another few hours in Abu Dhabi, then finally the fabled Istanbul.
(No posts, no replies to comments,
nor selling/sending Burning Questions. Come back later?)

Dick Osseman's large site helped work out where to go.
He's travelled widely there, & posts lots of museum photos too.

isaac & meike

Have just done the new poster for Isaac & Meike's meetings
here in Byron Bay; will miss two, am off on an exciting
trip that I think will resemble time travel.
You can click on the link top right, to see our book,
though sales are suspended while I'm away.

mural

Did I post this before? I heard the educational facility
that has owned it for past 20 years needs funds,
& is trying to find a buyer for my mural, it's 5 metres wide,
this is the right-hand third.
(See the Life Education Centre on the Gold Coast, Qld.
It's behind Pacific Fair, near the library)
I am leaving in a few days, then wont be posting till October.

invisible cities

I made a series of monoprints based on the locations in
Italo Calvino's wonderful Invisible Cities.

Anastasia, one morning your desires waken all at once

by hand

Two pages from a book that didn't happen, (hand lettered)
This was before computers.
I sold the paintings in an exhibition, & have used the
image right in Burning Questions
(The text is a translation of Huang Po)

what a splendid series of talks at the Rubin museum of art

impermanence

Two versions on the same subject
~ impermanence ~
with many years between painting the one
at top, & photographing the parts of
deteriorating buddhas for the one below.

wasted

When I did this (a long time ago) it clearly
wasn't working. The mask must have taken ages to cut.
Looks like I then used it as a cutting board, later still
as packing for photos. What interests me now
is the amount of trouble I was prepared to take, then:
days, weeks, even months. Is it computers that
have changed my attitude to time, or simply age?

cold, clear

Organising another trip(!!), so most days I need to walk
into town, usually check out the beach too, there have been
some clear & quite cold days, the air is so clean, lots of
sharp edges, right up to the mirage at the horizon.
The grass is somehow growing in salt water.

2 from a series of acrylic paintings I did of the sea.
6 or so years ago.

howtobearetronaut ~ lots of fun

shine

Made some big files by joining several photos, I really
liked this pagoda, it was different depending on the
time of day, & maybe other less quantifiable events

Gold inside temples glows in a marvelous way,
but it's outside, in sunlight, that it really starts to sing..
& even if it isn't gold, something happens at this pagoda.

naive

It's hard to categorise what is naive; some borders on kitch,
untaught doesn't always mean you can feel

that joyous little zap of communication that transmits
cross culturally. It's always a pleasure to come across,
though, don't you agree? Yes? No? How come no-one
says anything, I know you're there!!

Some folk art books ~ I'd like them all.

fishing

Large flocks of birds at the beach, fishing ~ great to watch
as they turn, sweep back their wings & dive, making
a big splash. Sometimes there are also dolphins feeding.
The new 12x zoom sees more than my eyes do.
I think these are Gannets

elephants

Bought a book for my sister The Elephant Whisperer.
We both like them very much. This one was somewhere near
the Mekong, the list at left kept track of who went where.

In the bookstore was a new one on the work of
Andy Goldsworthy, my favourite artist.

Honeyeaters, I think, very bold at one of the cafes.

details

From an afternoon of joining photos ~ as planned, when I
was there ~ sometimes I forget what the plan was,
but it was obvious these would not fit together. The timber
was coarse grained & slightly carved, before gold leafing.

spring?

The wattle has been trying to burst into Spring for weeks,
delayed by lots of rain, now it's happening. Not sure
when it's supposed to bloom, possibly it's confused.

The rain is growing vertical gardens on all the
tree trunks, especially in Mullumbimby.
I like the palm's almost metallic sheen.

if only I was a cook: hydrangea cupcakes
check out Peter Madden's work - a few here, & here
