next to

Decided to post some files that are next to each other
in my folders, but maybe not otherwise related, makes
me see them differently. So, some pretty Mexican sheep,
& a worn out snow lion mat ~ my friends have been in Tibet,
some great photos on flickr.

in time

Joining several shots to make a big file of the vertical photo,
was reminded of how it felt to be there: as if these
figures had pushed outwards through time, to adorn
the temple. Not sure if they are buddhas or bodhisattvas,
either way, they have such a calm presence.

relief

A detail from a relief at Angkor. Have coloured it as it
maybe was, long ago, because I couldn't get the contrast to
work ~ it's a delicate scene, a quieter moment
amongst vast dramatic battle panoramas.

places

A clean up of my desk today, unearthed a stash of prints.
These are: Merida, Tulum, Oaxaca, Morelia.
It's always nice to remember Mexico.

inner

Have been amusing myself with these, the detail looks good large,
These 4 are from one photo, basically the image is flipped,
which results in symmetry.

Its strange to see how often that produces a face, or figure;
to me they give a sense of the tree, flower, grass etc
that's similar to being really tuned in, appreciating it.
Sometimes a most bizarre or savage face stares back, there's
a marked difference between, say, an acacia & a palm.

haven't tried this yet, but want an antiqued mirror

Do you have those days when the landscape (not just
the clouds) resemble people, animals etc?

How about when there seems to be

messages...?

tiny

At the beach recently. They are tiny birds, often in pairs
at the waters' edge, & always make me smile: as they
sprint, only their legs seem to move. (below are seagulls)
The tiny birds might be sandpipers?
&, happily, a drongo visited the bird bath in my garden.

nature

Where I live, we say 'it's cold today', when it would be
a summer's day, elsewhere. The shadows grow darker
as the days get shorter. I like how a tropical tree
fern can begin to resemble a snowflake..
awesome how it all seems to hang together.

changeable

The days are changeable (if not interchangeable),
gray & cold one minute, sunny the next; am busy at
the computer, though today I got lost at
bibliodyssey ~ what a treasure trove.

22/05/2010

three

OK, this is the last of the posts on some of what I did while
learning the new medium of digital art. Still am learning:
there is something about being able to complete an image
in a day or two, that goes with a short attention span.
In viewers too, I think?

earlier

Near the beginning of my computer adventures,
I practiced a lot on mandalas, using a plug-in that helped
compose the various elements. Still like some of them,
though they did get very complex..

Right is made up of buddha heads. The collage left in retrospect
would have improved in 'hard copy'.
Being able to try out many ideas kept me interested.
We all have to make our own mistakes, probably ~
& draw our own conclusions.

learning-a

You can see how I was trying for both texture & depth,
it would have made more sense to make a 3D collage,
the eye still sees these as flat.
& how I wish I'd not used filters on anything!

learning-b

What you get from digital art is a print, which can look very
artificial, without texture. So for some time I added a lot to
the image ~ but it's still a flat print. Whereas with my
paintings I want a very realistic (smooth) effect, so that any
surprises aren't noticed, initially. To see what I mean,
look through the labels at right, or at Burning Questions

What the computer does allow: an exploration of
complex material that I'd hesitate to start painting unless
I felt sure of the idea..

dreaming

Shall post some of my earlier digital work in next days ~
their main flaw, perhaps, is due to getting carried away with
how much it's possible to do: my paintings took several weeks,
& the computer's speed was so attractive.
Not much was worth keeping from then.

Heard Antony Gormley on the abc last week, he speaks
so wonderfully, I love his work, terrific website too.

our times

So sad for what's happening in Bangkok right now.
Troubled times for so very many, &, simultaneously,
this life, this moment,
such luck.

archaic

When I was staying at a friend's place near Munich, beside
a lovely lake that had a long history of settlement, I found
stones on my walks ~ smoothed by glaciers, probably.
I started painting these small gouaches in a book.
Maybe I was tuning in to the early female inhabitants..
There are 33 pages, but it looks too nice as a book
to pull it apart in order to sell individual pages.

From the air ~ don't know how much you'll be able to see,

about flying: seeing the country.

feather

A few nights ago I had a dream, it was just a large &
intricately patterned feather, an other-worldly beauty;
above, though lovely, is from a local bird, a Coucal I think,
the dream feather would belong to an angel,

if they have feathers ~ or perhaps some unknown
creature of forgotten myths. Left ( from the Topkapi ?)
is one of my all time favourite images. Right is a detail from
a medieval tapestry.

disappear

When I listen to the radio, all the "news" is about money,
or rather the insane way governments (& people)
have been spending what they don't have.
Maybe I will also riot, if what I do have disappears..

If I was rich, maybe I'd stay in one of these gorgeous places

Not blue as in moody, just like a flower, a sky.

autumn

It is cooler lately, but the way I notice autumn is by the light:
the sun has a different angle, so the sun comes through the
trees, rather than from above,
making gentle patterns. Not as hard edged.

listening

Had to wait until I remembered to photograph an attractive
pair of ears, to finish this one. Left is an inner leaf of a
staghorn fern. Interesting how a shape or texture can remind
of ears/hearing ~ & the same for the other senses.
I know that the overlapping of the senses is called synesthesia,
as if it's different ~ but is it really?
Let me hear from you, anyway, ok?

I went to Kyoto, so many beautiful temples there.

drawings-2

From Bali about 1970. I stayed months longer than planned,
it was such a beautiful place to be, just about everyone
was an artist. My drawing books from those years are a bit
disappointing, mostly small scribbles of ideas for paintings.

There was a very large cremation during my stay ~ sensational!
